Nutritional Needs Hoof Care Teeth Care
Basic diet should be water, grass, and good quality hay.Water should be available all day. Most horses should eat between 2% and 4% of their body weight in pounds. Any change in the diet should be made slowly to prevent abdominal pain usually caused by intestinal disease.
Daily cleaning and trimmings every four to six weeks are essential to the continued good health of your horse’s feet. Hooves should be cleaned thoroughly before and after every ride or other activity. Both of you will benefit if the task is made simple and pleasurable.
Horses teeth never stop growing and uneven wear can lead to sharp points and edges that cause pain. Many horses have aged prematurely because their teeth began to fail them. Older horses with healthy teeth have far fewer digestive problems and live longer.
